English Translation
Isma'il - that is, Ibn Ulayyah - told us, from al-Jurayri, from Abu Nadrah, who said: We were with Jabir ibn Abdullah, and he said: "The people of Iraq are about to have neither a measure of grain nor a dirham brought to them." We said: "Why is that?" He said: "From the direction of the non-Arabs (the Persians); they will be prevented from that." Then he said: "The people of Syria are about to have neither a dinar nor a mudd brought to them." We said: "Why is that?" "From the direction of the Byzantines; they will be prevented from that." He said: Then he was silent a while, then said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There will be, at the end of my ummah, a caliph who scatters wealth in handfuls without counting it." Al-Jurayri said: I said to Abu Nadrah and Abu al-Ala: "Do you think he means Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, may Allah, the Exalted, be pleased with him?" They said: "No."
