English Translation
Sufyan told us, from Amr, who heard it from Jabir: Mu'adh used to pray with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then go back and lead his people in prayer — he said once, then go back and pray with his people. One night the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, delayed the prayer — he said once, the night prayer — so Mu'adh prayed with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then came to his people and recited the chapter of the Cow. A man among the people withdrew and prayed alone. It was said, "Have you become a hypocrite, so-and-so?" He said, "I have not become a hypocrite." Then he went to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, "Mu'adh prays with you, then goes back and leads us; O Messenger of Allah, we are people who work with our irrigation camels and labor with our hands, and he came and led us and recited the chapter of the Cow." So he said, "O Mu'adh, are you causing trial? Are you causing trial? Recite such-and-such." Abu al-Zubayr said: "'Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High' and 'By the night when it covers.'" We mentioned this to Amr, and he said, "I think he did mention it."
