حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ وُلِدَ لِرَجُلٍ مِنَّا غُلَامٌ فَأَسْمَاهُ الْقَاسِمَ فَقُلْنَا لَا نُكَنِّيكَ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ وَلَا نُنْعِمُكَ عَيْنًا فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ أَسْمِ ابْنَكَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ.
English Translation
Sufyan told us, from Ibn al-Munkadir, who heard Jabir ibn Abdullah say: A boy was born to a man among us, and he named him al-Qasim. We said, "We will not give you the byname Abu al-Qasim, nor will we please your eye by using that name." So he came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and mentioned that to him, and he said: "Name your son Abd al-Rahman."
