English Translation
Affan told us: Hammad told us, from Thabit, from Anas ibn Malik, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, took counsel when news reached him of Abu Sufyan's approach. He said: Abu Bakr spoke, and he turned away from him. Then Umar spoke, and he turned away from him. Then Sa'd ibn Ubada said: "Is it us the Messenger of Allah wants? By the One in whose hand is my soul, if you ordered us to wade our horses into the seas, we would wade them in; and if you ordered us to strike their livers all the way to Birk al-Ghimad, we would do it." Hammad said: Sulaym said, from Ibn Awn, from Amr ibn Sa'id: "al-Bighmad." So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, summoned the people, and they set out until they camped at Badr. The water-carriers of Quraysh came to them, and among them was a black youth belonging to Banu al-Hajjaj, and they seized him. The companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, were asking him about Abu Sufyan and his companions, and he would say: "I have no knowledge of Abu Sufyan, but this is Abu Jahl ibn Hisham, Utba ibn Rabi'a, Shayba, and Umayya ibn Khalaf." Whenever he said that, they beat him; and when they beat him, he would say: "Yes, I will tell you - this is Abu Sufyan." Then when they left him alone and asked him again, he said: "I have no knowledge of Abu Sufyan, but this is Abu Jahl, Utba, Shayba, and Umayya among the people." He said: Whenever he said this too, they beat him, while the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was standing praying. When he saw that, he turned away and said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, you beat him when he tells you the truth, and you leave him when he lies to you!" He said: And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "This is the place where so-and-so will fall tomorrow," placing his hand on the ground here and there - and none of them missed the spot where the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had placed his hand.
