English Translation

Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us: Humayd narrated to us, from Anas, who said: He saw spittle on the qiblah wall of the mosque, and it distressed him until that showed on his face, so he scraped it off and said: "Indeed one of you — or a person — when he stands for prayer, is conversing intimately with his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, or with his Lord, between him and the qiblah, so let him spit, if he must spit, to his left or beneath his foot," and he gestured as if into his garment. He said: We used to ask Humayd (who this referred to), and he would say: "Glory be to Allah, who else" — meaning the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him — and he would add nothing more.
