حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ، عَنْ سَلْمَانَ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ قَسَمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قِسْمَةً فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَغَيْرُ هَؤُلَاءِ أَحَقُّ مِنْهُمْ أَهْلُ الصُّفَّةِ قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّكُمْ تُخَيِّرُونِي بَيْنَ أَنْ تَسْأَلُونِي بِالْفُحْشِ وَبَيْنَ أَنْ تُبَخِّلُونِي وَلَسْتُ بِبَاخِلٍ.
English Translation
Hadrat Salman bin Rabee'ah said. I heard ‘Umar say: The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) shared out (some booty) and I said: O Beloved Messenger of Allah, others are more deserving of this than them: ahlus-suffah. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: `You are giving me the choice of having you ask importunately or regard me as a miser, and I am not a miser.`
