English Translation
'Abd al-Samad narrated to us: 'Ammar—that is, Abu Hashim, companion of al-Baghut—narrated to us, from Anas ibn Malik: that Bilal was late for the dawn prayer, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: "What kept you?" He said: "I passed by Fatima while she was grinding [grain], and the boy was crying, so I said to her: 'If you wish, I will spare you the mill and you spare me the boy, and if you wish, I will spare you the boy and you spare me the mill.'" So she said: "I am gentler with my son than you." He said: "That is what kept me." He said: "So you had mercy on her; may Allah have mercy on you."
