English Translation
'Abdullah ibn Idris narrated to us: I heard al-Mukhtar ibn Fulful say: I asked Anas ibn Malik about drinking from certain vessels. He said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade the muzaffatah," and he said, "every intoxicant is unlawful." I said, "What is the muzaffatah?" He said, "The pitch-coated vessel." I said, "What about lead vessels and glass?" He said, "There is no harm in them." I said, "But some people dislike them." He said, "Leave what raises doubt in you for what does not raise doubt, for every intoxicant is unlawful." I said to him, "You have spoken truly, intoxication is unlawful — but what of a sip or two with our food?" He said, "Whatever intoxicates in a large amount, a small amount of it is [also] unlawful." And he said: "Wine is made from grapes, dates, honey, wheat, barley, and corn — whatever of these you ferment becomes wine."
