حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامٌ الدَّسْتُوَائِيُّ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ تَذَاكَرْنَا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ فَأَتَيْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ وَكَانَ صَدِيقًا لِي فَقُلْتُ اخْرُجْ بِنَا إِلَى النَّخْلِ فَخَرَجَ وَعَلَيْهِ خَمِيصَةٌ لَهُ فَقُلْتُ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَذْكُرُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ قَالَ نَعَمْ اعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْعَشْرَ الْوَسَطَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَخَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَبِيحَةَ عِشْرِينَ فَقَالَ أُرِيتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فَأُنْسِيتُهَا أَوْ قَالَ فَنَسِيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فِي الْوَتْرِ فَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ أَنِّي أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ فَمَنْ كَانَ اعْتَكَفَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلْيَرْجِعْ فَرَجَعْنَا وَمَا نَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ قَزَعَةً فَجَاءَتْ سَحَابَةٌ فَمُطِرْنَا حَتَّى سَالَ سَقْفُ الْمَسْجِدِ وَكَانَ مِنْ جَرِيدِ النَّخْلِ وَأُقِيمَتْ الصَّلَاةُ وَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَسْجُدُ فِي الْمَاءِ وَالطِّينِ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ أَثَرَ الطِّينِ فِي جَبْهَتِهِ.
English Translation
Isma'il narrated to us, Hisham al-Dastuwa'i informed us, from Yahya b. Abi Kathir, from Abu Salamah, who said: We discussed the Night of Decree among a group of Quraysh, so I went to Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who was a friend of mine, and I said, "Come out with us to the palm groves." So he came out wearing a cloak of his, and I said, "Did you hear the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, mention the Night of Decree?" He said, "Yes. We made i'tikaf with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, during the middle ten days of Ramadan. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, addressed us on the morning of the twentieth and said: 'I was shown the Night of Decree, then I was made to forget it - or he said, I forgot it - so seek it in the last ten nights, in the odd ones, for I saw myself prostrating in water and mud. So whoever made i'tikaf with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, let him return.' So we returned, and we did not see a single cloud in the sky. Then a cloud came and it rained on us until the roof of the mosque - which was made of palm branches - leaked, and the prayer was established, and I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prostrating in the water and mud, until I saw the trace of mud on his forehead."
