English Translation
Abu Amir told us, Abbad - meaning Ibn Rashid - told us, from Dawud ibn Abi Hind, from Abu Nadrah, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: I witnessed a funeral with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "O people, this community is tried in its graves. When a person is buried and his companions disperse from him, an angel comes to him holding a rod and makes him sit up. He says: 'What do you say about this man?' If he was a believer, he says: 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.' So the angel says: 'You have spoken the truth.' Then a door to the Fire is opened for him, and it is said: 'This would have been your abode had you disbelieved in your Lord, but since you believed, this is your abode.' Then a door to Paradise is opened for him, and he desires to rise up to it, but he is told: 'Be still,' and space is made for him in his grave. But if he was a disbeliever or a hypocrite, he is asked: 'What do you say about this man?' He says: 'I do not know; I heard the people saying something.' So it is said to him: 'You neither knew nor recited nor were guided.' Then a door to Paradise is opened for him, and it is said: 'This would have been your abode had you believed in your Lord, but since you disbelieved in Him, Allah, Mighty and Sublime, has replaced it for you with this.' A door to the Fire is opened for him, then the angel strikes him a blow with the rod that all of Allah's creation hears, except the two weighty kinds - jinn and mankind." Some of the people said: "O Messenger of Allah, is there no one over whom an angel stands holding a rod without him being terrified at that?" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Allah makes firm those who believe with the firm word."
