Arabic (Original)
حَدَّثَنَا قَبِيصَةُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي الْوَرْدِ، عَنِ اللَّجْلاَجِ، عَنْ مُعَاذٍ قَالَ: مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَلَى رَجُلٍ يَقُولُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ تَمَامَ النِّعْمَةِ، قَالَ: هَلْ تَدْرِي مَا تَمَامُ النِّعْمَةِ؟ قَالَ: تَمَامُ النِّعْمَةِ دُخُولُ الْجَنَّةِ، وَالْفَوْزُ مِنَ النَّارِ. ثُمَّ مَرَّ عَلَى رَجُلٍ يَقُولُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الصَّبْرَ، قَالَ: قَدْ سَأَلْتَ رَبَّكَ الْبَلاَءَ، فَسَلْهُ الْعَافِيَةَ. وَمَرَّ عَلَى رَجُلٍ يَقُولُ: يَا ذَا الْجَلاَلِ وَالإِكْرَامِ، قَالَ: سَلْ.
English Translation
Muaz (may Allah be well pleased with him) said that the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) passed by a man who was saying:“O Allah, I ask you for all of the blessing.” He asked the man whether he knew what all the blessing meant and he said that it meant admittance to paradise and safety from Hell. Then the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) passed by another man who was saying: “O Allah! I ask you for patience”. the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated to him, "You have asked your lord for trial and difficulty over yourself. So, now ask him also for safety (aafiyah)". The Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) then came across a third man who said: “O owner of majesty and splendor!”. the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated to him, "Make a request!" (because you have called Allah by this great attribute).
Urdu Translation
حضرت معاذ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ فرماتے ہیں کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم ایک شخص کے پاس سے گزرے جو کہہ رہا تھا: 'اے اللہ! میں تجھ سے تمام بھلائی مانگتا ہوں۔' آپ نے پوچھا: 'کیا تم جانتے ہو تمام بھلائی سے کیا مراد ہے؟' اس نے کہا: 'جنت میں داخلہ اور جہنم سے نجات۔' پھر آپ دوسرے شخص کے پاس سے گزرے جو کہہ رہا تھا: 'اے اللہ! میں تجھ سے صبر مانگتا ہوں۔' آپ نے فرمایا: 'تم نے اپنے رب سے اپنے اوپر مصیبت اور مشکل مانگ لی۔ اب اس سے عافیت بھی مانگو۔' پھر آپ ایک تیسرے شخص کے پاس سے گزرے جو کہہ رہا تھا: 'یا ذا الجلال والاکرام!' آپ نے اس سے فرمایا: 'مانگو! (کیونکہ تم نے اللہ کو اس عظیم صفت سے پکارا ہے)۔'
