Arabic (Original)
فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَيُّ الدُّعَاءِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ: سَلِ اللَّهَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ، ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ الْغَدَ فَقَالَ: يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ، أَيُّ الدُّعَاءِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ: سَلِ اللَّهَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ، فَإِذَا أُعْطِيتَ الْعَافِيَةَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ فَقَدْ أَفْلَحْتَ.
English Translation
A man came to the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and said, "Beloved Messenger of Allah, what is the best supplication?" He answered, "Asking Allah for forgiveness and well-being in this world and the Next world." Then he came to him the following day and asked, "Prophet of Allah, what is the best supplication?" He answered, "Asking Allah for forgiveness and well-being in this world and the Next world. When you are given well-being in this world and the Next, then you have achieved success."
Urdu Translation
ایک شخص نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوا اور عرض کیا: 'یا رسول اللہ! بہترین دعا کیا ہے؟' آپ نے ارشاد فرمایا: 'اللہ سے دنیا اور آخرت میں مغفرت اور عافیت مانگنا۔' پھر اگلے دن آیا اور عرض کیا: 'اے اللہ کے نبی! بہترین دعا کیا ہے؟' آپ نے ارشاد فرمایا: 'اللہ سے دنیا اور آخرت میں مغفرت اور عافیت مانگنا۔ جب تمہیں دنیا اور آخرت میں عافیت مل جائے تو تم کامیاب ہو گئے۔'
