Arabic (Original)
حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبَانُ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ، أَنَّهُ بَلَغَهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ إِذَا رَأَى الْهِلاَلَ قَالَ " هِلاَلُ خَيْرٍ وَرُشْدٍ هِلاَلُ خَيْرٍ وَرُشْدٍ هِلاَلُ خَيْرٍ وَرُشْدٍ آمَنْتُ بِالَّذِي خَلَقَكَ " . ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ . ثُمَّ يَقُولُ " الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي ذَهَبَ بِشَهْرِ كَذَا وَجَاءَ بِشَهْرِ كَذَا " .
English Translation
It is narrated in mursal form from Qatadah that the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), when he saw the new moon, would say: A moon of goodness and guidance, a moon of goodness and guidance, a moon of goodness and guidance. I believe in the One Who created you — three times. Then he would say: All praise belongs to Allah Who has taken away such-and-such month and brought such-and-such month.
Urdu Translation
قتادہ سے مرسلاً روایت ہے کہ نبی اکرم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم جب چاند دیکھتے تو فرماتے: خیر اور رشد کا چاند ہے، خیر اور رشد کا چاند ہے، خیر اور رشد کا چاند ہے، میں اس ذات پر ایمان لایا جس نے تجھے پیدا کیا — تین مرتبہ۔ پھر فرماتے: اللہ تعالیٰ کا شکر ہے جس نے فلاں مہینہ لے گیا اور فلاں مہینہ لے آیا۔
