Qays ibn Bishr al-Taghlibi (upon him be mercy) narrates: My father informed me — and he was a companion of Hadrat Abu al-Darda (may Allah be well pleased with him) — that in Damascus there was a man from among the Companions of the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) known as Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah. He was a recluse who seldom sat with people; he was mostly engaged in prayer, and when he finished praying, he would remain occupied in glorification and exaltation of Allah until he returned to his family. One day he passed by us while we were sitting with Hadrat Abu al-Darda (may Allah be well pleased with him). Hadrat Abu al-Darda submitted to him: Tell us a word that benefits us and does not harm you. He said: The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) dispatched a military detachment. When it returned, one of its men came and sat in the place where the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) used to sit, and said to the man beside him: If only you had seen us when we met the enemy! Such-and-such a person charged and struck with his lance, saying: Take this from me, and I am the youth of the tribe of Ghifar! What do you think of his saying that? The man replied: I think his reward has been lost. Another man heard this and said: I see no harm in that. They disputed until the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) heard them and stated: Glory be to Allah! There is no harm if he is rewarded and also praised. My father said: I saw Hadrat Abu al-Darda (may Allah be well pleased with him) delighted upon hearing this, and he kept raising his head to him, asking: Did you hear that from the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)? He said: Yes. Hadrat Abu al-Darda kept repeating this question so many times that I thought he would fall upon his knees before him. Then on another day he passed by us, and Hadrat Abu al-Darda submitted: Tell us a word that benefits us and does not harm you. He said: The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated to us: The one who spends on the maintenance of horses (for jihad) is like one who stretches out his hand giving charity and never withdraws it. Then on yet another day he passed by us, and Hadrat Abu al-Darda submitted: Tell us a word that benefits us and does not harm you. He said: The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: Khuraym al-Asadi would be an excellent man were it not for the length of his hair and the trailing of his lower garment. When Khuraym heard this, he hastily took a knife, cut his hair to the level of his ears, and raised his lower garment to the middle of his shins. Then on another day he passed by us, and Hadrat Abu al-Darda submitted: Tell us a word that benefits us and does not harm you. He said: I heard the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) say: You are about to meet your brethren, so set right your mounts and set right your attire, so that you stand out among the people like a distinguishing mole, for Allah, the Exalted, does not love obscenity or deliberate shabbiness. Abu Dawud (upon him be mercy) said: Likewise Abu Nu'aym narrated from Hisham: 'so that you are like a mole among the people.'

قیس بن بشر تغلبی رحمۃ اللہ علیہ فرماتے ہیں کہ مجھے میرے والد نے بتایا — اور وہ حضرت ابوالدرداء رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کے ہم نشین تھے — کہ دمشق میں نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے ایک صحابی تھے جنہیں ابن الحنظلیّہ کہا جاتا تھا۔ وہ تنہائی پسند شخص تھے، لوگوں میں کم بیٹھتے تھے، اکثر نماز میں مشغول رہتے اور جب نماز سے فارغ ہوتے تو جب تک گھر نہ پہنچتے تسبیح و تکبیر ہی میں مشغول رہتے۔ ایک دن وہ ہمارے پاس سے گزرے اور ہم حضرت ابوالدرداء رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کے پاس بیٹھے تھے، تو حضرت ابوالدرداء نے ان سے عرض کیا: کوئی ایسی بات ارشاد فرمائیے جو ہمیں فائدہ دے اور آپ کو نقصان نہ ہو۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ایک سریّہ (فوجی دستہ) بھیجا، جب وہ واپس آیا تو اس میں کا ایک شخص اُس جگہ آ کر بیٹھ گیا جہاں رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم بیٹھا کرتے تھے، اور اپنے بغل والے شخص سے کہنے لگا: کاش تم ہمیں دیکھتے جب ہمارا دشمن سے مقابلہ ہوا! فلاں نے حملہ کیا اور نیزہ مارتے ہوئے کہا: لے یہ میرا وار، اور میں قبیلہ غفار کا نوجوان ہوں! تم اس کے اس قول کو کیسا سمجھتے ہو؟ اس شخص نے کہا: میں سمجھتا ہوں کہ اس کا اجر ضائع ہو گیا۔ ایک اور شخص نے سنا تو کہا: مجھے اس میں کوئی حرج نظر نہیں آتا۔ وہ دونوں بحث کرنے لگے یہاں تک کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے سنا تو ارشاد فرمایا: سبحان اللہ! اگر اسے ثواب بھی ملے اور لوگ اس کی تعریف بھی کریں تو اس میں کوئی حرج نہیں۔ والد فرماتے ہیں: میں نے دیکھا کہ حضرت ابوالدرداء رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ یہ سن کر بہت خوش ہوئے اور سر اٹھا اٹھا کر پوچھنے لگے: کیا آپ نے یہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے سنا ہے؟ وہ فرماتے: ہاں۔ حضرت ابوالدرداء بار بار یہی سوال دہراتے رہے یہاں تک کہ مجھے لگا کہ وہ ان کے سامنے گھٹنوں کے بل بیٹھ جائیں گے۔ پھر ایک اور دن وہ ہمارے پاس سے گزرے تو حضرت ابوالدرداء نے عرض کیا: کوئی ایسی بات ارشاد فرمائیے جو ہمیں فائدہ دے اور آپ کو نقصان نہ ہو۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: ہم سے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: (جہاد کے لیے) گھوڑوں پر خرچ کرنے والا اُس شخص کی مانند ہے جو ہاتھ پھیلا کر صدقہ کر رہا ہو اور اسے کبھی سمیٹتا نہ ہو۔ پھر ایک اور دن وہ گزرے تو حضرت ابوالدرداء نے عرض کیا: کوئی ایسی بات ارشاد فرمائیے جو ہمیں فائدہ دے اور آپ کو نقصان نہ ہو۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: ہم سے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: خُرَیم اسدی کیا اچھے آدمی ہیں، بس ان کے بال لمبے نہ ہوتے اور تہ بند ٹخنوں سے نیچے نہ لٹکتا۔ جب خُرَیم کو یہ بات پہنچی تو انہوں نے فوراً ایک چھری لے کر اپنے بال کانوں تک کاٹ لیے اور تہ بند آدھی پنڈلی تک اونچا کر لیا۔ پھر ایک اور دن وہ ہمارے پاس سے گزرے تو حضرت ابوالدرداء نے عرض کیا: کوئی ایسی بات ارشاد فرمائیے جو ہمیں فائدہ دے اور آپ کو نقصان نہ ہو۔ تو انہوں نے فرمایا: میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کو ارشاد فرماتے سنا: تم اپنے بھائیوں سے ملنے والے ہو، پس اپنی سواریاں درست کرو اور اپنا لباس سنوارو تاکہ تم لوگوں میں تِل کی مانند نمایاں ہو، کیونکہ اللہ تعالیٰ فحش گوئی اور بدحالی کو پسند نہیں فرماتا۔ حضرت ابوداؤد رحمۃ اللہ علیہ فرماتے ہیں: اسی طرح حضرت ابونعیم نے ہشام سے روایت کیا ہے کہ تاکہ تم لوگوں میں تِل کی مانند نمایاں ہو۔
