Hadrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be well pleased with them both) narrates from Hadrat Ammar ibn Yasir (may Allah be well pleased with them both) that the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) camped at Ulat al-Jaysh, and Umm al-Mu'minin Hadrat Aisha Siddiqah (may Allah be well pleased with her) was with him (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). Her necklace of Zafar onyx broke and fell. People were detained searching for her necklace until dawn broke, and the people had no water. Hadrat Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be well pleased with him) was displeased with her and said: 'You have detained the people while they have no water.' Then Allah the Exalted revealed to His Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) the concession to purify with clean earth (tayammum). The Muslims stood up with the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), struck the ground with their hands, raised them without picking up any soil, and wiped their faces and hands up to the shoulders, and from the inner sides of their palms to the armpits. Ibn Yahya adds in his narration: Ibn Shihab said in his tradition: 'People do not follow this (method)' — meaning the two-strike method up to the shoulders and armpits is not the standard practice. Abu Dawud states: Ibn Ishaq also narrated similarly — mentioning it from Hadrat Ibn Abbas and reporting two strikes as Yunus did. Ma'mar also narrated from al-Zuhri with two strikes. Malik narrated from al-Zuhri from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah from his father from Ammar — and Abu Uwais said the same from al-Zuhri. Ibn Uyaynah was uncertain in this chain — sometimes saying 'from Ubaydullah, from his father' or 'from Ubaydullah, from Hadrat Ibn Abbas' — sometimes 'from his father' and sometimes 'from Hadrat Ibn Abbas.' Ibn Uyaynah was inconsistent in this chain and in his hearing from al-Zuhri. None of them mentioned the two strikes in this tradition except those I have named.

حضرت ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما حضرت عمار بن یاسر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما سے روایت کرتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے «اولات الجیش» کے مقام پر پڑاؤ ڈالا اور آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے ساتھ حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین عائشہ صدیقہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا تھیں۔ ان کا ظفار کے عقیق (ایک پتھر) کا ہار ٹوٹ کر گر گیا۔ لوگ ہار کی تلاش میں رُکے رہے یہاں تک کہ صبح ہو گئی، اور لوگوں کے پاس پانی نہیں تھا۔ حضرت ابوبکر صدیق رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ ان پر ناراض ہوئے اور فرمایا: تم نے لوگوں کو روک دیا اور ان کے پاس پانی نہیں۔ اللہ سبحانہ و تعالیٰ نے اپنے رسول صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم پر پاک مٹی سے طہارت حاصل کرنے کی رخصت نازل فرمائی۔ مسلمان رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے ساتھ کھڑے ہوئے، اپنے ہاتھ زمین پر مارے پھر اٹھائے اور مٹی میں سے کچھ نہیں پکڑا، پھر اپنے چہروں اور ہاتھوں پر کندھوں تک اور ہتھیلیوں کی اندرونی جانب سے بغلوں تک مسح کیا۔ ابن یحییٰ نے اپنی حدیث میں اضافہ کیا: ابن شہاب نے اپنی حدیث میں کہا: لوگ اس (طریقے) پر عمل نہیں کرتے (یعنی دو مرتبہ مارنا اور کندھوں تک مسح کرنا معمول نہیں)۔ حضرت ابوداؤد فرماتے ہیں: ابن اسحاق نے بھی اسی طرح روایت کیا ہے — اس میں حضرت ابن عباس سے ذکر ہے اور دو مرتبہ مارنا بیان کیا ہے جیسے یونس نے کیا۔ معمر نے بھی زہری سے دو مرتبہ مارنا بیان کیا ہے۔ مالک نے زہری سے عبیداللہ بن عبداللہ سے ان کے والد سے عمار سے روایت کیا ہے — اسی طرح ابو اویس نے زہری سے کہا۔ ابن عیینہ نے اس میں شک کیا — کبھی «عبیداللہ سے ان کے والد سے» کہا، یا «عبیداللہ سے حضرت ابن عباس سے» — کبھی «ان کے والد سے» کہا اور کبھی «حضرت ابن عباس سے»۔ ابن عیینہ نے اس سند میں اضطراب کیا۔ ان میں سے کسی نے بھی اس حدیث میں دو مرتبہ مارنے کا ذکر نہیں کیا سوائے ان لوگوں کے جن کا میں نے نام لیا۔
