Hadrat Miswar ibn Makhramah (may Allah be well pleased with him) narrated: The Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) went out at the time of Hudaybiyyah with over a thousand of his Companions. When they reached Dhul Hulayfah, he garlanded the sacrificial animals, marked them, and entered the state of ihram for Umrah. (The hadith is lengthy.) He said: The Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) continued until he reached the pass from which one descends toward the Quraysh territory, and his she-camel knelt down. The people said: Hal, hal! Al-Qaswa' has become stubborn — twice. The Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: 'She has not become stubborn, nor is that her nature. Rather, she has been restrained by the One who restrained the Elephant (i.e., the event of the People of the Elephant).' Then he stated: 'By Him in Whose hand is my soul, they shall not ask me today for any plan in which they honor the sanctities of Allah except that I shall grant it to them.' Then he urged the camel and she leapt up. He turned away from them and halted at the farthest end of Hudaybiyyah at a spring with little water. Budayl ibn Warqa' al-Khuza'i came to him, then 'Urwah ibn Mas'ud came and began speaking with the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). Each time he spoke, he would grab the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)'s beard. Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah (may Allah be well pleased with him) was standing before the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) with a sword and wearing a helmet. He struck 'Urwah's hand with the pommel of the sword and said: Take your hand away from his beard. 'Urwah raised his head and asked: Who is this? They said: Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah. He said: O traitor! Am I not striving to rectify your treachery? Al-Mughirah had accompanied a group in the pre-Islamic era, killed them and taken their wealth, then came and accepted Islam. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: 'As for Islam, we have accepted it, but the wealth is wealth obtained through treachery — we have no need of it.' Then the hadith was narrated. The Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: 'Write: This is what Muhammad, Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), has agreed upon.' And the account was told. Suhayl said: And the condition is that any man from among us who comes to you, even if he is upon your religion, you shall return him to us. When the writing of the treaty was completed, the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated to his Companions: 'Rise, sacrifice, and shave your heads.' Then believing emigrant women came — the verse was revealed — Allah forbade them from returning the women and commanded them to return the dowries. Then he returned to Madinah. Abu Basir came — a man from Quraysh — meaning they sent men to demand his return. He handed him over to the two men. They took him, and when they reached Dhul Hulayfah, they sat down to eat dates. Abu Basir said to one of the two men: By Allah, I see your sword is excellent. The man drew it and said: Yes, I have tested it. Abu Basir said: Let me look at it. The man gave it to him, and Abu Basir struck him dead. The other fled until he came to Madinah and ran into the mosque. The Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: 'This one has surely seen something terrifying.' He said: By Allah, my companion has been killed and I am about to be killed! Then Abu Basir came and submitted: Allah has fulfilled Your covenant — You returned me to them, then Allah saved me from them. The Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: 'Woe to his mother! He is a firebrand of war — if only he had someone (to support him).' When Abu Basir heard this, he understood that the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) would send him back, so he left and went to the seashore. Abu Jandal also escaped and joined Abu Basir until a band of them gathered.
