Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz narrated to us, from Hajjaj ibn al-Minhal, from Abu Awanah, from Mansur, from Ibrahim, from Alqamah who said: A man came to Ibn Mas'ud and said: 'There were some words between me and my wife, and she said: If the authority over my affairs in your hands were in mine, I would know what to do. I said: I call you to witness that the authority over your affairs that is in my hand is now in yours. She said: Then you are divorced three times.' Ibn Mas'ud said: 'It counts as one divorce and you have more right to her. I will ask the Commander of the Faithful about it.' He traveled and met Umar and told him the story. Umar said: 'A stone in her mouth! May Allah do this and that to the men who take what Allah has placed in their hands regarding women's affairs and put it in the women's hands! What do you think?' He said: 'I consider it one and he has more right to her.' He said: 'An excellent opinion, and had you ruled otherwise, you would not have been correct.'
