Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz narrated to us, from Hajjaj ibn al-Minhal, from Yazid ibn Ibrahim, from Muhammad ibn Sirin, from Alqamah ibn Qays al-Nakha'i who said: A man came to Ibn Mas'ud and said that he had divorced his wife the previous night eight times. He asked: 'Did you say it all at once?' He said: Yes. He asked: 'Did you intend to make her irrevocably divorced?' He said: Yes. He said: 'It is as you said.' Then another man came and said he had divorced his wife the previous night by the number of the stars. He asked: 'Did you say it all at once?' He said: Yes. He asked: 'Did you intend to make her irrevocably divorced?' He said: Yes. He said: 'It is as you said.' Then he said: 'Allah, Glorified and Exalted, has made clear the rules of divorce. Whoever divorces as Allah has commanded, it has been made clear for him. Whoever confuses matters for himself, we will hold him to his confusion. By Allah, you will not confuse matters for yourselves and then expect us to bear it for you - it is as you say.' Ibn Sirin said - a word I do not recall - that he said: 'Even if he had all the women of the earth and then said this, they would all be gone from him.'
