Abdullah ibn Mas'ud addressed us one day with a sermon the like of which he never delivered before or after. He said: 'O people, fear Allah, and hold fast to obedience and the community, for they are the rope of Allah that He commanded. What you dislike in obedience and community is better than what you like in division. Allah has not created anything in this world except that He has set a limit for it, after which it declines until the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, the bonds of Islam have been firmly established, but they will soon diminish and decline until the Day of Resurrection. The sign of that is that you will sever your family ties, poverty will spread, the rich will fear nothing but poverty, the poor will find no one to help, and a beggar will walk between two Fridays without receiving anything. While people are in that state, the earth will bellow like the bellowing of a cow - every people will think it bellowed from their area. Then there will be a pause, then the earth will bellow a second time and cast out the treasures of its interior.' They asked: 'What are the treasures of its interior?' He said: 'Pillars of gold and silver like these pillars. From that day, gold and silver will be of no benefit until the Day of Resurrection, and no one will find anyone to accept charity from his wealth.'
