Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:829 حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ثنا مُسَدَّدٌ ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ ثنا يُونُسُ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ سَرِيعٍ قَالَ غَزَوْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَفَتَحَ لَهُمْ فَتَنَاوَلَ بَعْضُ النَّاسِ قَتْلَ الْوِلْدَانِ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «مَا بَالُ أَقْوَامٍ جَاوَزَ بِهِمُ الْقَتْلُ حَتَّى قَتَلُوا الذُّرِّيَّةَ» فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّمَا هُمْ أَبْنَاءُ الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَقَالَ «خِيَارُكُمْ أَبْنَاءُ الْمُشْرِكِينَ أَلَا لَا تُقْتَلُ الذُّرِّيَّةُ كُلُّ نَسَمَةٍ تُولَدُ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ حَتَّى يُعْرِبَ عَنْهَا لِسَانُهَا فَأَبَوَاهَا يُهَوِّدَانِهَا وَيُنَصِّرَانِهَا»

Al-Aswad ibn Sari' said: I went on a military expedition with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and he granted them victory. Some people went so far as to kill children. This reached the Prophet (peace be upon him), and he said: "What is wrong with people that they went so far in killing that they killed children?" A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, they are only the children of polytheists." He said: "The best among you are the children of polytheists. Indeed, no child is to be killed. Every soul is born upon the fitrah until his tongue speaks on his behalf, then his parents make him a Jew or a Christian."
