Uthman ibn Abi al-As said: I arrived with the delegation of Thaqif when they came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). We put on our fine garments at the Prophet's door. They said: 'Who will hold our riding camels for us?' — for everyone wanted to enter upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) and none wanted to stay behind. Uthman said — and he was the youngest: 'If you wish, I will hold them for you, on the condition that you pledge to hold them for me when you come out.' They said: 'That is yours.' They entered and came out, then said: 'Let us go.' I said: 'Where?' They said: 'To your family.' I said: 'I traveled all this way only to arrive at the Prophet's door and go back without entering? You gave me your word.' They said: 'Hurry then, for we have taken care of the questions — we asked about everything.' So I entered and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, supplicate to Allah to grant me understanding of the religion and teach me.' He said: 'What did you say?' I repeated my words. He said: 'You have asked me something that none of your companions asked. Go, for you are their leader and the leader of whoever you come upon from your people. Lead the people in prayer according to the weakest among them.' I later came to him again and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have been ill since I left you.' He said: 'Place your right hand on the spot that hurts and say: I seek refuge in the might of Allah and His power from the evil of what I find — seven times.' I did so, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, healed me.
