Talha ibn al-Bara' came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: 'Extend your hand [so I may pledge allegiance].' He said: 'Even if I order you to cut ties with your mother?' He said: 'No.' Then I came to him again and said: 'Extend your hand so I may pledge allegiance to you.' He said: 'On what?' I said: 'On Islam.' He said: 'Even if I order you to cut ties with your mother?' I said: 'No.' Then I came to him a third time. He had a mother and was one of the most dutiful people to her. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'O Talha, in our religion there is no cutting of family ties, but I wanted there to be no doubt in your religion.' So he accepted Islam and his Islam was good. Then he fell ill, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) visited him and found him unconscious. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'I think Talha will pass away tonight. If he regains consciousness, send for me.' Talha regained consciousness in the middle of the night and said: 'Did the Messenger of Allah visit me?' They said: 'Yes,' and told him what he said. He said: 'Do not send for him at this hour, lest a creature bite him or something harm him. But when morning comes, convey my greetings to him and tell him to seek forgiveness for me.' Then he passed away. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed the dawn prayer, he asked about him and they told him of his death and what he had said. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) raised his hand and said: 'O Allah, let him meet You while he is laughing at You and You are laughing at him.'
