Jabir ibn 'Abdullah said: "We went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) as pilgrims intending only the Hajj and nothing else. When we reached Sarif, 'A'ishah began menstruating. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) entered upon her while she was weeping and said: 'What makes you weep?' She said: 'I have been afflicted (with menses).' He said: 'You are but one of the daughters of Adam; you are afflicted with what afflicts them.' We arrived in Makkah on the fourth of Dhul-Hijjah and circumambulated the Ka'bah and (walked) between Safa and Marwah as the Messenger of Allah commanded us. Then we discussed among ourselves and said: 'We came out as pilgrims intending only the Hajj, and now when there are only four nights left between us and 'Arafat...' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) heard about this and stood up and gave a sermon, saying: 'The 'umrah has entered into the Hajj. If I could have foreseen what I came to know later, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal. Were it not for the sacrificial animal, I would have exited ihram. So whoever does not have a sacrificial animal, let him exit ihram.' Suraqah ibn Malik ibn Ju'shum al-Mudliji said: 'O Messenger of Allah, explain to us as if we were people just born today — is this 'umrah for our year only, or forever?' He said: 'Forever.' When we reached 'Arafat and were about to depart, 'A'ishah said: 'O Messenger of Allah, you have circumambulated the Ka'bah and (walked) between Safa and Marwah, but I could not circumambulate.' He said: 'You have what the people have.' She said: 'But I still feel it in myself.' So the Messenger of Allah stopped for her at the upper valley of Makkah and had 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr ride with her to al-Tan'im."
