Al-Ashtar said: Khalid ibn al-Walid initiated speaking to us without our asking and said: I have not done any deed that I fear more for putting me in the Fire than the matter of Ammar. We said: O Abu Sulayman, what is it? He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent me with some of his companions to a clan of the Arabs. We attacked them and among them was a Muslim household. Ammar spoke to me about some of his companions and said: Release them. I said: No, not until I bring them to the Messenger of Allah. If he wishes, he will release them; if he wishes, he will do with them what he wants. I entered upon the Messenger of Allah and Ammar asked permission and entered. He said: O Messenger of Allah, did you not see what Khalid did? Khalid said: By Allah, were it not for your presence, the son of Sumayyah would not have insulted me. The Messenger of Allah said: "Leave, O Ammar." He left weeping and said: The Messenger of Allah did not help me against Khalid. The Messenger of Allah said to me: "Did you not respond to the man?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, nothing prevented me except my contempt for him. The Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever despises Ammar, Allah will despise him; whoever insults Ammar, Allah will insult him; and whoever belittles Ammar, Allah will belittle him." I went out and followed him and spoke to him until he forgave me.
