Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:12362 حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ ثنا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْعَطَّارُ ثنا قَيْسُ بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَإِذَا الْيَهُودُ يَصُومُونَ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالَ «مَا بَالُ هَذَا الْيَوْمِ؟» قَالَ «يَوْمٌ أَنْجَى اللهُ فِيهِ مُوسَى وَأَغْرَقَ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ فَنَحْنُ أَحَقُّ بِمُوسَى فَصَامَهُ وَأَمَرَ بِصِيَامِهِ»

The Prophet (peace be upon him) arrived and found the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. He asked: 'What is the significance of this day?' They said: 'It is a day on which Allah saved Musa and drowned the Children of Israel.' So he said: 'We have more right to Musa than you.' So he fasted it and ordered its fasting.
