Ibn Abbas narrated regarding the verse {And when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you}: The Quraysh consulted one night in Makkah. Some of them said: "Restrain him with chains" - meaning the Prophet ♂. Others said: "Kill him." And others said: "Expel him." So Allah informed His Prophet ♂ of that. Ali slept on the bed of the Prophet ♂ that night, and the Messenger of Allah ♂ left until he reached the cave. The polytheists spent the night guarding Ali, thinking he was the Prophet ♂. When morning came, they rushed to him, and when they saw Ali, Allah foiled their plot. They said: "Where is your companion?" He said: "I do not know." They tracked his footsteps, and when they reached the mountain, they became confused. They climbed the mountain and passed by the cave, and there was a spider's web over its entrance. He remained in it for three days.
