Ibn Abbas said: Aisha purchased Barirah from the Ansar to free her, and they stipulated that they would retain her patronage (wala). She agreed to that for them. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) came, she informed him, and he said: 'Patronage belongs only to the one who frees.' Then he ascended the pulpit and said: 'What is the matter with people who stipulate conditions that are not in the Book of Allah? Whatever condition is not in the Book of Allah is to be referred back to the Book of Allah.' Barirah had a husband, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) gave her the choice: if she wished, she could stay with her husband as she was, and if she wished, she could leave him. She chose to leave him. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) entered and saw a leg of sheep and said to Aisha: 'Will you not cook this meat for us?' She said: 'It was given in charity to Barirah, and she gifted it to us.' He said: 'Cook it, for it is charity for her and a gift for us.'
