Ibn Abbas narrated: Marwan said: 'Go, O Abu Rafi' — to his doorkeeper — to Ibn Abbas.' It was said to him: 'If every one of us who is pleased with what he was given and loves to be praised for what he does were to be punished, then we would all be punished.' Ibn Abbas said: 'What do you have to do with this verse? It was only revealed regarding the People of the Book.' Then Ibn Abbas recited: {And when Allah took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture to make it known to the people} until: {Think not that those who rejoice in what they have done and love to be praised for what they have not done.} Ibn Abbas said: 'The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked them about something, and they were jealous, so they concealed it and told him something else. They rejoiced and went out, having shown him that they answered what he asked them, and sought praise from him for that while rejoicing in what they concealed from him.'
