Rib'i ibn Hirash said: "Abdullah ibn Abbas sought permission to enter upon Mu'awiyah while the clans of Quraysh were gathered around him, and Sa'id ibn al-'As was sitting at his right. When Mu'awiyah saw him, he said: 'O Sa'id, by Allah, I will pose questions to Ibn Abbas that will stump him.' Sa'id said: 'The likes of Ibn Abbas cannot be stumped by your questions.' When he sat down, Mu'awiyah asked: 'What do you say about Abu Bakr?' He said: 'May Allah have mercy on Abu Bakr. By Allah, he was a reciter of the Quran, distant from deviation, oblivious to immorality, forbidding evil, knowledgeable of his religion, fearful of Allah, avoiding destructive matters, standing in night prayer, fasting by day, safe from worldly attachment, resolute in justice for the people, commanding good and patient towards it, grateful in all circumstances, remembering Allah morning and evening, conquering his soul with what benefits it. He surpassed his companions in piety, restraint, asceticism, and chastity. May Allah curse whoever insults him until the Day of Resurrection.'"
