Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When this verse was revealed: 'Whether you reveal what is in yourselves or conceal it, Allah will bring you to account for it' (al-Baqarah: 284), something entered their hearts that had never entered before. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Say: We hear and we obey.' Then Allah cast faith into their hearts, and He revealed: 'Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. It will have what it has earned, and it will bear what it has earned. Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make a mistake.' He said: 'I have done so.' 'Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us.' He said: 'I have done so.' 'Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear.' He said: 'I have done so.'
