Hadrat Abdullah bin Ka'b (may Allah be well pleased with him) said: "I heard Hadrat Ka'b bin Malik telling the story of when he stayed behind from going out on the campaign of Tabuk with the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). He said: 'The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) came back in the morning, and when he came back from a journey he would go to the Masjid first and pray two Rak'ahs there, then he would sit to (meet with) the people. When he did that, those who had stayed behind came to him and started giving their excuses, swearing by Allah. There were eighty-odd men, and the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) accepted what they declared and accepted their oaths of allegiance; he prayed for forgiveness for them and left whatever was in their hearts to Allah. Then when I came and greeted him, he smiled as one who is angry, then he said: 'Come here.' So I came and sat in front of him, [1] and he said: 'What kept you behind? Did you not buy a mount?' I submitted: 'O Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), if I were to sit before anyone other than you of those who hold high positions in this world, I would find a way to avoid his anger. I am an eloquent man but, by Allah, I know that if I were to tell you a lie today to make you pleased with me, Allah would soon make you angry with me, but if I tell you the truth, it will make you angry with me, but I will still have the hope that Allah may forgive me. I have never been in a better position, physically or financially, than the time when I stayed behind and did not join you.' The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: 'This man has spoken the truth. Go away until Allah decides concerning you.' So I got up and went away." This is an abridged version of narration. [1] It is this which the author cited the narration for. While the absence of the mention of a thing - in this case prayer - is not a proof that it does not exist

عبداللہ بن کعب فرماتے ہیں کہ میں نے کعب بن مالک رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے سنا، وہ اپنا وہ واقعہ بیان کر رہے تھے جب وہ غزوہ تبوک میں رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے پیچھے رہ گئے تھے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم صبح کو تشریف لائے، اور جب آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سفر سے واپس آتے تو پہلے مسجد جاتے اور اس میں دو رکعت نماز پڑھتے، پھر لوگوں سے ملنے کے لیے بیٹھتے، جب آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ایسا کر لیا تو جنگ سے پیچھے رہ جانے والے لوگ آپ کے پاس آئے، آپ سے معذرت کرنے لگے، اور آپ کے سامنے قسمیں کھانے لگے، وہ اسّی سے کچھ زائد لوگ تھے تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ان کے ظاہری بیان کو قبول کر لیا، اور ان سے بیعت کر لی، اور ان کے لیے مغفرت کی دعا کی، اور ان کے دلوں کے راز کو اللہ عزوجل کے سپرد کر دیا، یہاں تک کہ میں آیا تو جب میں نے سلام کیا، تو آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم مجھے دیکھ کر مسکرائے جیسے کوئی غصہ میں مسکراتا ہے، پھر فرمایا: آ جاؤ! چنانچہ میں آ کر آپ کے سامنے بیٹھ گیا ۱؎، تو آپ نے مجھ سے پوچھا: تم کیوں پیچھے رہ گئے تھے؟ کیا تم نے اپنی سواری خرید نہیں لی تھی؟ میں نے عرض کیا: اللہ کے رسول! اللہ کی قسم اگر میں آپ کے علاوہ کسی اور کے پاس ہوتا تو میں اس کے غصہ سے اپنے آپ کو یقیناً بچا لیتا، مجھے باتیں بنانی خوب آتی ہے لیکن اللہ کی قسم، میں جانتا ہوں کہ اگر آپ کو خوش کرنے کے لیے میں آج آپ سے جھوٹ موٹ کہہ دوں تو قریب ہے کہ جلد ہی اللہ تعالیٰ آپ کو مجھ سے ناراض کر دے، اور اگر میں آپ سے سچ سچ کہہ دوں تو آپ مجھ پر ناراض تو ہوں گے لیکن مجھے امید ہے کہ اللہ مجھے معاف کر دے گا، اللہ کی قسم جب میں آپ سے پیچھے رہ گیا تھا تو اس وقت میں زیادہ طاقتوراور زیادہ مال والا تھا، تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: رہا یہ شخص تو اس نے سچ کہا، اٹھو چلے جاؤ یہاں تک کہ اللہ آپ کے بارے میں کوئی فیصلہ کر دے ، چنانچہ میں اٹھ کر چلا آیا، یہ حدیث لمبی ہے یہاں مختصراً منقول ہے۔
