Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): For a whole year I intended to ask Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about this verse, but I could not on account of my awe of him, until he set out for Hajj and I set out with him. Then when we were returning, Umar turned aside toward some arak trees to relieve himself, and I waited for him until he had finished his need, then I walked with him. And I said: O Commander of the Faithful! Who were the two women, from among the Prophet's (peace be upon him) wives, who backed one another against the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)? He said: They were Hafsah and A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with them). He (Ibn Abbas) says: I said to him: By Allah, for a year I have wanted to ask you about this, but I could not out of awe of you. So he said: No, do not do that; whatever you think I might know, ask me about it, and if I know, I will tell you. He (Ibn Abbas) says: Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah the Exalted, previously we were mired in ignorance (jahiliyyah) and gave women no importance, until Allah revealed concerning them what He revealed regarding their rights and fixed for them the turns He fixed. It so happened one day that I was consulting about some matter when my wife said: You would do well if you did such-and-such. So I said to her: What business is it of yours in my affairs? What concern is it of yours what I intend? She said to me: O Ibn al-Khattab! It is astonishing — you do not even want to be answered back, whereas your own daughter answers back the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), so that he remains angry the whole day. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: So I took my cloak and went out and came in upon Hafsah and said to her: O my dear daughter! Do you answer back the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) so that he remains angry the whole day? Hafsah said: By Allah, I do answer him back. So I said to her: Know that I warn you of the punishment of Allah the Exalted and the anger of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). O my daughter! Do not be deceived by that wife who is proud of her beauty and the Messenger of Allah's (peace be upon him) love (i.e., A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her). Then I went out from there and came in upon Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), on account of the kinship I had with her, and I spoke to her. Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to me: O Ibn al-Khattab! It is astonishing about you — you interfere in everything, so that you even wish to interfere in the affair between the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and his wives. Her words grieved me greatly and held me back from the counsel I had intended, and I left her. I had a friend among the Ansar; when I was absent, he would inform me (of the gathering and sayings of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him), and when he was absent, I would inform him. In those days we were fearful of one of the kings of Ghassan, and there was talk among us that he intended to march against us, and our chests were filled with the thought of him. During that time my friend came and knocked at the door and said: Open! Open! I said: Have the Ghassanids come? He said: No, rather something more distressing than that: the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has separated from his pure wives. So I said: May the noses of Hafsah and A'ishah be rubbed in the dust. Then I took my clothes and went out until I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and he (peace be upon him) was in an upper chamber that one climbed to by a palm-trunk, and a black slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was at the top of the stairs. So I said: This is Umar. I was granted permission. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then I related this whole story to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and when I reached the words of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) smiled. He (peace be upon him) was on a mat, with nothing between him and the mat, and under his (peace be upon him) head was a leather pillow stuffed with palm-fiber. At his (peace be upon him) feet was a heap of salam leaves (used for tanning hides), and at his (peace be upon him) head hung an untanned hide. I saw the mark and impression of the mat on the side of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and began to weep. He (peace be upon him) said: "O Umar! What has made you weep?" I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Indeed, Chosroes and Caesar are in luxury, while you are the Messenger of Allah. Then he (peace be upon him) said: "Are you not content that the world be for them and the Hereafter for you?" [Mukhtasar Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 857]

سیدنا عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے، کہتے ہیں کہمیں ایک سال تک سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ سے اس آیت کے بارے پوچھنے کا ارادہ کرتا رہا لیکن ان کے رعب کی وجہ سے نہ پوچھ سکا، یہاں تک کہ وہ حج کو نکلے اور میں بھی ان کے ساتھ نکلا۔ پھر جب واپسی میں تھے کہ سیدنا عمر ایک بار پیلو کے درختوں کی طرف کسی حاجت کو جھکے اور میں ان کے لئے ٹھہرا رہا، یہاں تک کہ وہ اپنی حاجت سے فارغ ہوئے تو میں ان کے ساتھ چلا۔ اور میں نے کہا کہ اے امیرالمؤمنین! وہ دونوں عورتیں کون ہیں جنہوں نے رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمپر آپ کی ازواج میں سے زور ڈالا، تو انہوں نے کہا کہ وہ حفصہ اور عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہما ہیں۔ کہتے ہیں کہ میں نے ان سے کہا کہ اللہ کی قسم میں آپ سے اس بارے میں ایک سال سے پوچھنا چاہتا تھا لیکن آپ کی ہیبت سے نہ پوچھ سکا تھا۔ تو انہوں نے کہا کہ نہیں ایسا مت کرو، جو بات تمہیں خیال آئے کہ مجھے معلوم ہے اس کو تم مجھ سے دریافت کر لو، اگر میں جانتا ہوں تو تمہیں بتا دوں گا۔ کہتے ہیں پھر سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ اللہ تعالیٰ کی قسم ہم پہلے جاہلیت میں گرفتار تھے اور عورتوں کو کچھ اہمیت نہیں دیتے تھے، یہاں تک کہ اللہ نے ان کے ادائے حقوق میں اتارا جو کہ اتارا اور ان کے لئے باری مقرر کی جو مقرر کی۔ چنانچہ ایک دن ایسا ہوا کہ میں کسی کام میں مشورہ کر رہا تھا کہ میری بیوی نے کہا کہ تم اس طرح کرتے تو خوب ہوتا، تو میں نے اس سے کہا کہ تجھے میرے کام میں کیا دخل؟ جس کا میں ارادہ کرتا ہوں تجھے اس سے کیا سروکار؟ تو اس نے مجھ سے کہا کہ اے ابن خطاب! تعجب ہے تم تو چاہتے ہو کہ کوئی تمہیں جواب ہی نہ دے حالانکہ تمہاری صاحبزادی رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکو جواب دیتی ہے، یہاں تک کہ وہ دن بھر غصہ رہتے ہیں۔ سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ پھر میں اپنی چادر لے کر گھر سے نکلا اور حفصہ پر داخل ہوا اور اس سے کہا کہ اے میری پیاری بیٹی! تو رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکو جواب دیتی ہے یہاں تک کہ وہ دن بھر غصہ میں رہتے ہیں؟ تو حفصہ نے کہا کہ اللہ کی قسم میں تو ان کو جواب دیتی ہوں پس میں نے اس سے کہا کہ تو جان لے میں تجھ کو اللہ تعالیٰ کے عذاب اور رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکی ناراضگی سے ڈراتا ہوں اے میری بیٹی! تم اس بیوی کے دھوکے میں مت رہو جو اپنے حسن، اور رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکی محبت پر ناز کرتی ہیں (یعنی ام المؤمنین عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا)۔ پھر میں وہاں سے نکلا اور ام سلمہ رضی اللہ عنہا سے اس قرابت کے سبب جو مجھے ان کے ساتھ تھی داخل ہوا اور میں نے ان سے بات کی۔ ام اسلمہ رضی اللہ عنہا نے مجھ سے کہا کہ اے ابن خطاب! تم پر تعجب ہے کہ تم ہر چیز میں دخل دیتے ہو یہاں تک کہ تم چاہتے ہو کہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلماور ان کی ازواج کے معاملہ میں بھی دخل دو۔ مجھے ان کی اس بات سے بہت صدمہ پہنچا جس نے مجھے اس نصیحت سے باز رکھا جو میں کرنا چاہتا تھا۔ اور میں ان کے پاس سے چلا آیا۔ انصار میں سے میرا ایک دوست تھا کہ جب میں غائب ہوتا تو وہ مجھے (رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکی مجلس اور احادیث کی) خبر دیتا اور جب وہ غائب ہوتا تو میں اس کو خبر دیتا تھا اور ہم ان دنوں غسان کے بادشاہوں میں سے ایک بادشاہ کا خوف رکھتے تھے اور ہم میں چرچا تھا کہ وہ ہماری طرف آنے کا ارادہ رکھتا ہے اور ہمارے سینے اس کے خیال سے بھرے ہوئے تھے۔ اس دوران میرے دوست نے آ کر دروازہ بجایا اور کہا کہ کھولو کھولو! میں نے کہا کہ کیا غسانی آ گئے؟ اس نے کہا کہ نہیں بلکہ اس سے بھی زیادہ پریشانی کی ایک بات ہے، کہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلماپنی ازواج مطہرات سے جدا ہو گئے ہیں۔ پس میں نے کہا کہ حفصہ اور عائشہ کی ناک خاک آلود ہو۔ پھر میں نے اپنے کپڑے لئے اور نکلا یہاں تک کہ میں رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے پاس حاضر ہوا اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمایک بالاخانے میں تھے کہ اس کے اوپر کھجور کی ایک جڑ سے چڑھتے تھے اور رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکا ایک سیاہ فام غلام اس سیڑھی کے سرے پر تھا۔ پس میں نے کہا کہ یہ عمر ہے میرے لئے اجازت دی گئی۔ سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ پھر میں نے یہ سب قصہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمسے بیان کیا اور جب میں ام سلمہ رضی اللہ عنہا کی بات پر پہنچا تو رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلممسکرا دیئے اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمایک چٹائی پر تھے کہ ان کے اور چٹائی کے بیچ میں اور کوئی بچھونا نہ تھا اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے سر کے نیچے چمڑے کا ایک تکیہ تھا جس میں کھجور کا چھلکا بھرا ہوا تھا۔ اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے پیروں کی طرف سلم کے کچھ پتے ڈھیر تھے (جس سے چمڑے کو رنگتے ہیں) اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے سرہانے ایک کچا چمڑا لٹکا ہوا تھا۔ میں نے رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے پہلو پر چٹائی کا اثر اور نشان دیکھا تو رونے لگا۔ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا: اے عمر! تجھے کس بات نے رلایا؟ میں نے کہ کہ اے اللہ کے رسولصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم! بیشک کسریٰ اور قیصر عیش میں ہیں اور آپ اللہ کے رسول ہیں۔ تب آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ کیا تم راضی نہیں ہو کہ ان کیلئے دنیا ہو اور تمہارے لئے آخرت۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 857]
