Narrated Abu al-Tufayl, he said: I said to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), "What is your view: is trotting (ramal) three times and walking four times in Tawaf a Sunnah? For your people say it is a Sunnah." He said, "They are both truthful and mistaken." I asked, "What does that mean—that they spoke truth and spoke falsely?" He said, "When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came to Makkah, the polytheists said that Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his (peace be upon him) Companions could not circumambulate the Sacred House because of weakness and frailty—and they were envious of him (peace be upon him). So he (peace be upon him) commanded them to trot three times and to walk four times in the usual manner. (The point is that what they regarded as an emphasized, intended Sunnah, that was their error; the rest of the matter was true.) Then I said, 'Tell me about doing the say between Safa and Marwah while mounted—is that a Sunnah? For your people call it a Sunnah.' He said, 'They are both truthful and mistaken.' I said, 'What does that mean?' He said, 'When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came to Makkah, there was such a crowd of people that even the secluded virgins came out, and the people began saying, This is Muhammad (peace be upon him), this is Muhammad (peace be upon him); and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) (was of such noble character that) people were not struck away before him (i.e., there was no crying out Make way, get back, as is done for the rulers of the world; such was not done for him (peace be upon him)). Then, when there was a great crowd of people, he (peace be upon him) mounted—and doing the say on foot is superior.'" (That is, only this much was a falsehood: that a thing done out of necessity was called a Sunnah where there was no necessity; the rest is true, that he (peace be upon him) did the say while mounted.)

سیدنا ابوالطفیل کہتے ہیں کہمیں نے سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے کہا کہ آپ کا کیا خیال ہے طواف میں تین بار رمل کرنا اور چار بار چلنا سنت ہے؟ اس لئے کہ تمہارے لوگ کہتے ہیں کہ وہ سنت ہے۔ تو انہوں نے کہا کہ وہ سچے بھی جھوٹے بھی ہیں۔ میں نے پوچھا اس کا کیا مطلب کہ انہوں نے سچ بولا اور جھوٹ کہا؟ انہوں نے کہا کہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمجب مکہ میں تشریف لائے تو مشرکوں نے کہا، کہ محمد (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے اصحاب بیت اللہ شریف کا طواف ضعف اور لاغری و کمزوری کے سبب نہیں کر سکتے اور وہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمسے حسد رکھتے تھے۔ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے حکم دیا کہ تین بار رمل کریں اور چار بار عادت کے موافق چلیں (غرض یہ ہے کہ انہوں نے اس فعل کو جو سنت مؤکدہ مقصودہ سمجھا، یہ ان کا جھوٹ تھا باقی بات سچ تھی) پھر میں نے کہا کہ ہمیں صفا اور مروہ کے درمیان میں سوار ہو کر سعی کرنے کے بارے میں بتائیے کہ کیا یہ سنت ہے؟ کیونکہ آپ کے لوگ اسے سنت کہتے ہیں۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ وہ سچے بھی ہیں اور جھوٹے بھی۔ میں نے کہا کہ اس کا کیا مطلب؟ انہوں نے فرمایا کہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمجب مکہ میں تشریف لائے تو لوگوں کی بھیڑ ایسی ہوئی کہ کنواری عورتیں تک باہر نکل آئیں اور لوگ کہنے لگے کہ یہ محمد (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) ہیں یہ محمد (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) ہیں اور رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم(کی خوش خلقی ایسی تھی کہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) کے آگے لوگ مارے نہ جاتے تھے (یعنی ہٹو بچو، جیسے امرائے دنیا کے واسطے ہوتی ہے، ویسی آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے لئے نہ ہوتی تھی) پھر جب لوگوں کی بڑی بھیڑ ہوئی تو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمسوار ہو گئے اور پیدل سعی کرنا افضل ہے (یعنی اتنا جھوٹ ہوا کہ جو چیز بضرورت ہوتی تھی اس کو بلا ضرورت سنت کہا باقی سچ ہے کہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے سوار ہو کر سعی کی)۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 695]
