Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: One day, early in the morning, I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). He (peace be upon him) heard the voices of two men disputing about a verse. So he (peace be upon him) came out, and anger could be seen on his (peace be upon him) face. He (peace be upon him) said: "The people before you were destroyed because of their disputing over the Book of Allah." (Such disputing as arises from egotism and mischievous intent, or to mislead people. But disputing to ascertain the meaning and to derive the rulings of religion is permissible. — Nawawi.)
الترجمة الأردية
سیدنا عبداللہ بن عمرو رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہایک دن میں صبح سویرے رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے پاس گیا۔ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے دو آدمیوں کی آواز سنی جو ایک آیت کے بارے میں جھگڑ رہے تھے تو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمباہر نکلے اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے چہرے پر غصہ معلوم ہوتا تھا۔ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ تم سے پہلے لوگ اللہ تعالیٰ کی کتاب میں جھگڑا کرنے کی وجہ سے تباہ ہوئے (جو نفسانیت اور فساد کی نیت سے ہو یا لوگوں کو بہکانے کے لئے۔ لیکن مطلب کی تحقیق کے لئے اور دین کے احکام نکالنے کے لئے درست ہے۔ نووی)۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 2121]
