Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) says: I went to the Mother of the Believers Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said, "Do you know that your father will not appoint anyone as caliph?" I said, "He would not do such a thing." She said, "He will indeed do so." I swore that I would mention this to him. Then I remained silent, and the next morning too I could not say it to him, but my state was as though someone were holding a mountain in his hand (the burden of the oath). At last I returned to him, and he began asking me about the condition of the people, and I kept telling him. Then I said, "I have heard something from the people, and I have sworn that I would surely mention it to you; they think that you will not appoint anyone as caliph. If you had a herdsman for camels or for goats, and then he came to you leaving those camels and goats, you would think that those animals had been ruined; in that case, thought for people is all the more necessary." My saying this gave him pause, and for a while he remained with his head bowed (in thought), then he raised his head and said, "Allah, the Majestic and Glorious, will protect His religion. If I do not appoint a caliph, then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not appoint anyone as caliph, and if I do appoint a caliph, then Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) appointed a caliph." Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then, by Allah, when he mentioned the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), I understood that he would not equate anyone with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and that he would not appoint a caliph.

سیدنا ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہمیں ام المؤمنین حفصہ رضی اللہ عنہا کے پاس گیا اور انہوں نے کہا کہ کیا تمہیں معلوم ہے کہ تمہارے والد کسی کو خلیفہ مقرر نہیں کریں گے؟ میں نے کہا کہ وہ ایسا نہیں کریں گے۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ وہ ایسا ہی کریں گے۔ میں نے قسم کھائی کہ میں ان سے اس کا ذکر کروں گا۔ پھر چپ رہا، دوسرے دن صبح کو بھی میں نے ان سے نہیں کہہ سکا، لیکن میرا حال ایسا تھا جیسے کوئی پہاڑ کو ہاتھ میں لئے ہو (قسم کا بوجھ تھا)۔ آخر میں لوٹ کر ان کے پاس گیا وہ مجھ سے لوگوں کا حال پوچھنے لگے تو میں بیان کرتا رہا، پھر میں نے کہا کہ میں نے لوگوں سے ایک بات سنی ہے اور قسم کھا لی کہ آپ سے ضرور اس کا ذکر کروں گا، وہ سمجھتے ہیں کہ آپ کسی کو خلیفہ نہیں کریں گے۔ اگر آپ کا اونٹوں کا یا بکریوں کا کوئی چرانے والا ہو، پھر وہ آپ کے پاس ان اونٹوں اور بکریوں کو چھوڑ کر چلا آئے تو آپ یہ سمجھیں گے کہ وہ جانور برباد ہو گئے، اس صورت میں آدمیوں کا خیال تو اور بھی ضروری ہے۔ میرے اس کہنے سے ان کو خیال ہوا اور ایک گھڑی تک وہ سر جھکائے رہے (فکر کیا کئے) پھر سر اٹھایا اور کہا کہ اللہ جل جلالہ اپنے دین کی حفاظت کرے گا اور میں اگر خلیفہ مقرر نہ کروں، تو رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے کسی کو خلیفہ مقرر نہیں کیا اور اگر خلیفہ مقرر کروں تو سیدنا ابوبکر صدیق رضی اللہ عنہ نے خلیفہ مقرر کیا ہے۔ عبداللہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ پھر اللہ کی قسم جب انہوں نے رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلماور سیدنا ابوبکر صدیق رضی اللہ عنہ کا ذکر کیا تو میں سمجھ گیا کہ وہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے برابر کسی کو نہیں کرنے والے اور وہ خلیفہ مقرر نہیں کریں گے۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 1197]
