Hadrat ' A'isha (may Allah be well pleased with her), the wife of the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), reported: The first (form) with which the revelation was commenced to the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) was the true vision in sleep. He did not see any vision but it came like the bright gleam of dawn. Thenceforth solitude became dear to him and he used to seclude himself in the cave of Hira', where he would engage in tahannuth — and that is worship — for a number of nights before returning to his family and getting provisions again for this purpose. He would come to Hadrat Khadija (may Allah be well pleased with her) and take provisions for a like period, till the Truth came to him while he was in the cave of Hira'. The angel came to him and said: Recite! He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: 'I am not one who recites.' He said: 'He seized me and pressed me so hard that I was greatly distressed, then he released me and said: Recite! I said: I am not one who recites. He seized me a second time and pressed me until I was greatly distressed, then he released me and said: Recite! I said: I am not one who recites. He seized me a third time and pressed me, then released me and said: Recite in the name of your Lord Who created, created man from a clot. Recite, and your Lord is the Most Generous.' Hadrat ' A'isha (may Allah be well pleased with her) said: Then the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) returned with a trembling heart and came to Hadrat Khadija bint Khuwailid (may Allah be well pleased with her) and said: 'Wrap me up, wrap me up!' They wrapped him up until his fear subsided. Then he (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) told Hadrat Khadija (may Allah be well pleased with her) the whole account and said: 'I feared for my life.' Hadrat Khadija (may Allah be well pleased with her) submitted: Never! By Allah, Allah will never humiliate you. You maintain ties of kinship, you bear the burden of the weak, you provide for the destitute, you honour the guest, and you help in the afflictions of truth. Then Hadrat Khadija (may Allah be well pleased with her) took him to Waraqa bin Nawfal bin Asad bin 'Abdul 'Uzza, the cousin of Hadrat Khadija (may Allah be well pleased with her). He had embraced Christianity in the Days of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) and used to write in the Hebrew script. He would write from the Gospel in Hebrew as much as Allah willed. He was an old man who had become blind. Hadrat Khadija (may Allah be well pleased with her) said to him: O son of my uncle! Listen to your nephew. Waraqa said: O my nephew! What do you see? The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) told him what he had seen. Waraqa said: This is the same Namus (i.e. Jibra'il, peace be upon him) whom Allah had sent to Musa (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). Would that I were young! Would that I were alive when your people will drive you out! The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: 'Will they really drive me out?' Waraqa said: Yes! Never has anyone come with what you have come with but was treated with hostility, and if your day comes to me, I will support you vigorously. Then after a short while Waraqa passed away and the revelation was paused.

یونس نے ابن شہاب (زہری) سے خبر دی، انہوں نے کہا: مجھے عروہ بن حضرت زبیر نے حدیث سنائی کہ حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین عائشہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا نے انہیں خبر دی، انہوں نے کہا: رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی طرف وحی کا آغاز سب سے پہلے نیند میں سچے خواب آنے سے ہوا۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم جو خواب بھی دیکھتے اس کی تعبیر صبح کے روشن ہونے کی طرح سامنے آ جاتی، پھر خلوت نشینی آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کو محبوب ہو گئی، آپ غار حراء میں خلوت اختیار فرماتے اور گھر واپس تشریف لا کر (دوبارہ) اسی غرض کے لیے زاد راہ لانے سے پہلے (مقررہ) تعداد میں راتیں تحنث میں مصروف رہتے، تحنث عبادت گزاری ہے، پھر حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین خدیجہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا کے پاس تشریف لاتے اور اسی قدر مدت کے لیے دوبارہ زادِ راہ لے جاتے، یہاں تک کہ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس حق آ گیا جبکہ آپ غار حراء میں تشریف فرما تھے۔ آپ کے پاس فرشتہ آیا اور کہا: پڑھیے! آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ''میں پڑھا ہوا نہیں ہوں۔'' آپ نے فرمایا: ''اس نے مجھے پکڑا اور مجھے اتنا بھینچا کہ مجھے انتہائی مشقت ہوئی، پھر چھوڑ دیا اور کہا: پڑھیے! میں نے کہا: میں پڑھا ہوا نہیں ہوں۔ اس نے مجھے دوسری بار پکڑا اور بھینچا حتیٰ کہ مجھے بے حد مشقت ہوئی، پھر چھوڑ دیا اور کہا: پڑھیے! میں نے کہا: میں پڑھا ہوا نہیں ہوں۔ اس نے تیسری بار مجھے پکڑا اور بھینچا، پھر چھوڑ دیا اور کہا: 'پڑھیے اپنے رب کے نام سے جس نے پیدا کیا، انسان کو خون کے لوتھڑے سے پیدا کیا، پڑھیے اور آپ کا رب بڑا کریم ہے۔''' حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین عائشہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا نے فرمایا: پھر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کانپتے ہوئے دل سے واپس تشریف لائے اور حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین خدیجہ بنت خویلد رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا کے پاس آئے اور فرمایا: ''مجھے کپڑا اڑھاؤ، مجھے کپڑا اڑھاؤ!'' آپ کو کپڑا اڑھایا حتیٰ کہ آپ کا خوف دور ہوا۔ پھر آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین خدیجہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا کو ساری بات بتائی اور فرمایا: ''مجھے اپنی جان کا خطرہ محسوس ہوا۔'' حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین خدیجہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا نے عرض کیا: ہرگز نہیں! اللہ کی قسم! اللہ تعالیٰ آپ کو ہرگز رسوا نہ کرے گا، آپ تو صلہ رحمی کرتے ہیں، بوجھ اٹھاتے ہیں، محتاجوں کا بندوبست کرتے ہیں، مہمان نوازی کرتے ہیں اور حق کی مصیبتوں میں مدد فرماتے ہیں۔ پھر حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین خدیجہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا آپ کو لے کر ورقہ بن نوفل بن اسد بن عبد العزیٰ کے پاس آئیں جو حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین خدیجہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا کے چچا زاد بھائی تھے۔ انہوں نے زمانہ جاہلیت میں عیسائیت اختیار کی تھی اور عبرانی زبان میں لکھا کرتے تھے، انجیل کو عبرانی زبان میں لکھتے تھے جتنا اللہ تعالیٰ چاہتا۔ وہ بہت بوڑھے اور نابینا ہو چکے تھے۔ حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین خدیجہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا نے ان سے کہا: اے چچا کے بیٹے! اپنے بھتیجے کی بات سنیں۔ ورقہ نے کہا: بھتیجے! تم کیا دیکھتے ہو؟ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے جو کچھ دیکھا تھا وہ بیان فرمایا۔ ورقہ نے کہا: یہ وہی ناموس (جبرائیل علیہ السلام) ہے جسے اللہ تعالیٰ نے موسیٰ (علیہ السلام) پر نازل فرمایا تھا۔ کاش میں اس وقت طاقتور ہوتا! کاش میں اس وقت زندہ ہوتا جب تمہاری قوم تمہیں نکالے گی! رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ''کیا وہ مجھے واقعی نکالیں گے؟'' ورقہ نے کہا: ہاں! جو شخص بھی وہ لے کر آیا جو تم لے کر آئے ہو اس سے دشمنی کی گئی اور اگر مجھے تمہارا وہ دن مل جائے تو میں تمہاری بھرپور مدد کروں گا۔ پھر زیادہ عرصہ نہ گزرا کہ ورقہ کا انتقال ہو گیا اور وحی بند ہو گئی۔
