Hadrat Muhammad ibn Rafi' narrated, he said: 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, he said: Ibn Juraij informed us, he said: I asked 'Ata': Which time do you prefer for me to pray the 'Isha prayer — which people call 'Atamah — whether as an imam or alone? He said: I heard Hadrat Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be well pleased with them both) say: One night the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) delayed the 'Isha prayer until the people slept, then woke up, then slept again and woke up. Then Hadrat 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be well pleased with him) stood up and called out loudly: Prayer! 'Ata' said: Hadrat Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be well pleased with them both) said: The Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) came out — it is as if I can still see him — water was dripping from his blessed head, and his hand was placed on one side of his head. He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: 'Were it not that it would be a hardship on my Ummah, I would have commanded them to pray this prayer at this time.' (Ibn Juraij) said: I asked 'Ata' carefully how Hadrat Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be well pleased with them both) described how the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) placed his hand on his head. 'Ata' spread his fingers slightly, placed the tips on the side of his head, then moved them pressing along the head until his thumb touched the edge of the ear near the face, then the temple and the edge of the beard — doing it gently without pressing hard or gripping anything. I asked 'Ata': Were you told how long the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) delayed (the prayer) that night? He said: I do not know. 'Ata' said: I prefer to delay this prayer, whether I am the imam or praying alone, as the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) prayed that night. But if delaying it is difficult for you individually, or for the people in congregation when you are their imam, then pray it at a middle time — neither too early nor too late.

محمد بن رافع نے بیان کیا، کہا ہمیں عبد الرزاق نے حدیث سنائی، کہا ہمیں ابن جریج نے خبر دی، انہوں نے کہا: میں نے عطاء سے پوچھا: آپ کے نزدیک کون سی گھڑی زیادہ پسندیدہ ہے کہ میں اس میں عشاء کی نماز — جسے لوگ عتمہ کہتے ہیں — امام کے ساتھ یا انفرادی طور پر پڑھوں؟ انہوں نے جواب دیا: میں نے حضرت ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما سے سنا، وہ فرما رہے تھے: ایک رات نبی اکرم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے عشاء کی نماز میں دیر کر دی حتیٰ کہ لوگ سوئے، پھر بیدار ہوئے، پھر سوئے اور بیدار ہوئے، تو حضرت عمر بن خطاب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کھڑے ہوئے اور بلند آواز سے کہا: نماز! عطاء نے کہا: حضرت ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما نے بتایا: تو نبی اکرم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم باہر تشریف لائے — ایسا لگتا ہے کہ میں اب بھی آپ کو دیکھ رہا ہوں — آپ کے سر مبارک سے قطرہ قطرہ پانی ٹپک رہا تھا اور (بالوں سے پانی نکالنے کے لیے) آپ نے اپنا ہاتھ سر کے آدھے حصے پر رکھا ہوا تھا۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ''اگر یہ بات نہ ہوتی کہ میری امت کے لیے مشقت ہو گی تو میں انہیں حکم دیتا کہ وہ اس نماز کو اسی وقت پڑھا کریں۔'' (ابن جریج نے) کہا: میں نے عطاء سے اچھی طرح پوچھا کہ حضرت ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما نے انہیں کس طرح بتایا کہ نبی اکرم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے اپنا ہاتھ کس انداز سے اپنے سر پر رکھا تھا؟ تو عطاء نے میرے سامنے اپنی انگلیاں کسی قدر کھولیں، پھر اپنی انگلیوں کے کنارے سر کی ایک جانب رکھے، پھر انہیں دباتے ہوئے اس طرح سر پر پھیرا یہاں تک کہ ان کا انگوٹھا کان کے اس کنارے کو چھونے لگا جو چہرے کے قریب ہوتا ہے، پھر کنپٹی اور داڑھی کے کنارے کو (چھوا) — بس اس طرح کیا، نہ (دباؤ میں) کمی کی نہ کسی چیز کو پکڑا۔ میں نے عطاء سے پوچھا: آپ کو کیا بتایا گیا کہ اس رات نبی اکرم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے کتنی تاخیر کی؟ انہوں نے کہا: مجھے معلوم نہیں۔ عطاء نے کہا: میرے نزدیک زیادہ پسندیدہ یہی ہے کہ میں امام ہوں یا اکیلا، یہ نماز تاخیر سے پڑھوں، جس طرح نبی اکرم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے اس رات پڑھی تھی۔ اگر یہ بات تمہارے لیے انفرادی طور پر یا جماعت کی صورت میں لوگوں کے لیے — جب تم ان کے امام ہو — دشواری کا باعث ہو تو اسے درمیانے وقت میں پڑھو، نہ جلدی اور نہ مؤخر کر کے۔
