Ahmad bin Ali bin al-Muthanna narrated to us, Abu Khaythamah narrated to us, Jarir narrated to us from Mansur from Abd Allah bin Murrah from Masruq from Abdullah who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'The last person to enter Paradise will be a man who will walk one time and stumble one time, and the Fire will scorch him one time. Then when he passes beyond it, he will turn around and say: Blessed is He Who saved me from you! Allah has given me something He has not given to anyone of the first and the last.' Then a tree will be raised for him, and he will say: O Lord, bring me near to this tree so that I may take shelter in its shade and drink of its water. Allah will say: O son of Adam, if I give you this, will you ask Me for anything else? He will say: No, my Lord. And he will promise Him that he will not ask for anything else. So his Lord will excuse him, because he sees what he cannot help desiring. So He will bring him near to it, and he will take shelter in its shade and drink of its water. Then another tree, more beautiful than the first, will be raised for him. He will say: O Lord, bring me near to this tree so that I may take shelter in its shade and drink of its water, and I will not ask You for anything else. He will say: O son of Adam, did you not promise Me that you would not ask Me for anything else? He will say: O Lord, bring me near to this tree, and I will not ask You for anything else. So his Lord will excuse him, because he sees what he cannot help desiring. Then he will be brought near to it, and he will take shelter in its shade and drink of its water. Then another tree will be raised for him at the gate of Paradise, more beautiful than the first two. He will say: O Lord, bring me near to this tree so that I may take shelter in its shade and drink of its water, and I will not ask You for anything else. He will say: O son of Adam, did you not promise Me that you would not ask Me for anything else? He will say: Yes, my Lord, but bring me near to this tree, and I will not ask You for anything else. So his Lord will excuse him, because he sees what he cannot help desiring. So He will bring him near to it, and when He brings him near to it, he will hear the voices of the people of Paradise. He will say: O Lord, admit me into it. He will say: O son of Adam, what will make you stop asking? Will it please you if I give you the like of the world and the same again with it? He will say: O Lord, are You mocking me when You are the Lord of the Worlds?' And Ibn Mas'ud laughed and said: Why do you not ask me why I am laughing? They said: Why are you laughing? He said: This is how the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) laughed. They said: Why are you laughing, O Messenger of Allah? He said: 'From the laughter of the Lord of the Worlds when he says: Are You mocking me when You are the Lord of the Worlds? So He will say: I am not mocking you, but I am Able to do whatever I will.'
