Abu Ya'la informed us, Wahb ibn Baqiyyah narrated to us, Khalid informed us from Dawud ibn Abi Hind from Abu Harb ibn Abi al-Aswad from Talhah ibn Amr who said: When a man came to Madinah, if he had an acquaintance there - meaning a patron - he would stay with his patron. If he had no patron there, he would stay at al-Suffah. He said: I was among those who stayed at al-Suffah. He said: I accompanied a man, and we would be given from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ every day a mudd of dates between two men. One day he finished the prayer and a man from among us called him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, the dates have burned our stomachs." The Prophet ﷺ turned to his pulpit and ascended it, praised Allah and extolled Him, then mentioned what he had endured from his people. He said: "Until I and my companion stayed for more than ten days with no food except berries" - and berries are the fruit of the arak tree. "Then we came to our brothers from the Ansar, and the main part of their food was dates, and they shared it with us. By Allah, if I could find bread and meat for you, I would feed you, but perhaps you will reach a time - or whoever reaches it among you - when you will wear garments like the coverings of the Ka'bah, and trays of food will be brought to you morning and evening."
