Sa'id ibn Jubayr narrated: I was asked about the mutala'inain (those who perform li'an) during the governorship of Mus'ab — are they to be separated? I did not know what to say. So I went immediately to the house of Hadrat Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be well pleased with them both) while he was taking a nap. I sought permission and the servant said: "He is napping." I said: "I must enter upon him." He heard my voice, recognized it, and said: "Is it Sa'id?" I said: "Yes." He said: "Enter — you would not have come at this hour except for a need." I entered while he was resting on the saddle-cloth of his mount, using a pillow stuffed with palm fiber. I said: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman, are the mutala'inain separated?" He said: "Glory be to Allah! Yes. Indeed the first person who asked about that was so-and-so who came to the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what if one of us sees his wife committing indecency — what should he do? If he speaks, he speaks of a grave matter; if he remains silent, he remains silent upon the like of it.' The Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) did not answer him. Later, he came again to the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, the matter I asked you about has befallen me.' So Allah the Exalted and Majestic revealed these verses. He called the man, recited them to him, admonished him, reminded him, and informed him that the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter. The man said: 'No, by the One Who sent you with the truth, I have not lied about her.' Then he called the woman, admonished her, reminded her, and informed her that the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter. She said: 'By the One Who sent you with the truth, he is lying.' He began with the man — he testified four times by Allah that he was truthful, and the fifth that the curse of Allah be upon him if he was lying. Then the woman — she testified four times by Allah that he was lying, and the fifth that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he was truthful. Then he separated them."

سعید بن جبیر سے روایت ہے: مصعب کے دورِ حکومت میں مجھ سے متلاعنین (لعان کرنے والوں) کے بارے میں پوچھا گیا — کیا ان کے درمیان تفریق کی جائے؟ مجھے معلوم نہیں تھا کیا کہوں۔ میں فوراً حضرت عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما کے گھر پہنچا اور وہ قیلولہ فرما رہے تھے۔ میں نے اجازت طلب کی تو خادم نے کہا: وہ قیلولہ فرما رہے ہیں۔ میں نے کہا: مجھے ضرور اندر جانا ہے۔ انہوں نے میری آواز سنی، پہچان لیا اور فرمایا: سعید ہو؟ میں نے عرض کیا: ہاں۔ فرمایا: اندر آؤ، تم اس وقت بغیر ضرورت کے نہیں آتے۔ میں اندر گیا جبکہ وہ اپنی سواری کی زین بچھائے، لیف بھرا تکیہ لگائے آرام فرما رہے تھے۔ میں نے عرض کیا: اے ابوعبدالرحمٰن! کیا متلاعنین کے درمیان تفریق کی جائے؟ انہوں نے فرمایا: سبحان اللہ! ہاں۔ سب سے پہلے اس بارے میں فلاں نے پوچھا جو نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس آئے اور عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! اگر ہم میں سے کوئی اپنی بیوی کو بدکاری پر دیکھے تو کیا کرے؟ اگر بولے تو بڑی بات بولتا ہے اور اگر خاموش رہے تو ایسے ہی معاملے پر خاموش رہتا ہے۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے اسے جواب نہیں دیا۔ بعد میں وہ دوبارہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس آیا اور عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! جس بارے میں میں نے آپ سے پوچھا تھا وہ مجھ پر آ پڑا ہے۔ تو اللہ عزوجل نے یہ آیات نازل فرمائیں۔ آپ نے اس شخص کو بلایا، اسے تلاوت سنائی، نصیحت کی، یاد دہانی کرائی اور بتایا کہ دنیا کا عذاب آخرت کے عذاب سے ہلکا ہے۔ اس نے کہا: نہیں، اس ذات کی قسم جس نے آپ کو حق کے ساتھ بھیجا! میں نے اس پر جھوٹ نہیں بولا۔ پھر آپ نے عورت کو بلایا، نصیحت کی، یاد دہانی کرائی اور بتایا کہ دنیا کا عذاب آخرت کے عذاب سے ہلکا ہے۔ اس نے کہا: اس ذات کی قسم جس نے آپ کو حق کے ساتھ بھیجا! یہ جھوٹا ہے۔ آپ نے مرد سے شروع کیا — اس نے چار بار اللہ کی قسم کھا کر گواہی دی کہ وہ سچوں میں سے ہے، اور پانچویں بار کہ اللہ کی لعنت اس پر ہو اگر وہ جھوٹوں میں سے ہو۔ پھر عورت — اس نے چار بار اللہ کی قسم کھا کر گواہی دی کہ وہ جھوٹوں میں سے ہے، اور پانچویں بار کہ اللہ کا غضب اس پر ہو اگر وہ سچوں میں سے ہو۔ پھر آپ نے ان کے درمیان تفریق فرما دی۔
