Abu Musa al-Ash'ari reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The likeness of the believer who recites the Quran is like the citron (utrujjah) — its taste is good and its fragrance is good. And the likeness of the believer who does not recite the Quran is like the date — its taste is good but it has no fragrance. The likeness of the hypocrite who recites the Quran is like the sweet basil (rayhanah) — its fragrance is good but its taste is bitter. And the likeness of the hypocrite who does not recite the Quran is like the colocynth (hanzalah) — it has no fragrance and its taste is bitter."
