Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab, the Commander of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with him): During the blessed lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), I heard Hisham ibn Hakim (may Allah be pleased with him) reciting Surah al-Furqan. I listened attentively and found that he was reciting it in several ways different from the ways in which the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had taught me this sura. (I became angry, and) I was about to attack him during the very prayer, but I restrained myself until, when he had said the salam, I threw my cloak around his neck and said, "Who taught you this sura which I heard you reciting?" He answered, "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) taught it to me." I said, "You are lying, for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) himself taught me this sura in a different way." Then I dragged him along to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I heard this man reciting Surah al-Furqan in a way other than the way you taught me." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Let him go, (and he said,) O Hisham! Recite it." He recited it in the very way in which I had heard him reciting, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "This sura was revealed just like this." Then he said, "O Umar! Now you recite." I recited it in the way that he (peace be upon him) had taught me, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "It was revealed just like this. Indeed, this Qur'an was revealed in seven modes (dialects), so recite in whichever mode is easy for you."

امیرالمؤمنین عمر بن خطاب رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہمیں نے رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکی حیات مبارکہ میں سیدنا ہشام بن حکیم رضی اللہ عنہ کو سورۃ الفرقان پڑھتے ہوئے سنا، میں نے غور سے سنا تو دیکھا کہ وہ ایسے کئی دوسرے طریقوں سے پڑھ رہے ہیں جن طریقوں سے رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے مجھے یہ سورت نہیں پڑھائی تھی (مجھے غصہ آ گیا) قریب تھا کہ میں نماز ہی میں ان پر حملہ کرتا لیکن میں نے صبر کیا، یہاں تک کہ جب انھوں نے سلام پھیر لیا تو میں نے ان کے گلے میں چادر ڈال لی اور کہا کہ یہ سورت تمہیں کس نے پڑھائی ہے جو میں نے تمہیں پڑھتے ہوئے سنا؟ انھوں نے جواب دیا کہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے سکھائی ہے۔ میں نے کہا کہ تم جھوٹ کہتے ہو مجھے تو خود رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے یہ سورت دوسرے طریقوں سے سکھائی ہے پھر میں انھیں کھینچتا ہوا رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے پاس لے آیا اور عرض کی کہ یا رسول اللہ! میں نے انھیں سورۃ الفرقان اور ہی طریقہ سے پڑھتے سنا ہے جس سے آپ نے مجھے نہیں پڑھائی۔ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا:”اسے چھوڑ دو (اور کہا کہ) اے ہشام! پڑھو تو سہی۔“انھوں نے اس اسی طریقے سے پڑھا جیسے میں نے انھیں پڑھتے ہوئے سنا تھا تو رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا:”یہ سورت اسی طرح نازل ہوئی ہے۔“پھر فرمایا:”اے عمر! اب تم پڑھو۔“میں نے اس طریقے سے جو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے مجھے سکھایا تھا، پڑھا تو رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا:”اسی طرح نازل ہوئی ہے، بیشک یہ قرآن سات طریقوں (لغتوں) پر اترا ہے پس تم اسی طریقے سے پڑھو جو تمہیں آسان معلوم ہوا۔“[مختصر صحيح بخاري/حدیث: 1808]
