Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us saying: Yahya ibn Said narrated to us from Malik from Nafi from Ibn Umar from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be well pleased with them) from the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) who said: «While a man was walking, he became very thirsty. He found a well, went down into it, drank from it, and then came out. Then he saw a dog panting and eating mud out of thirst. The man said: 'This dog has reached the same state of thirst that I reached.' So he went down into the well, filled his shoe with water, held it in his mouth, climbed up, and gave the dog water to drink. Allah appreciated this from him and forgave him.» They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, do we have a reward for animals?' He said: «In every living being there is a reward.»
