أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبِي عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ هَكَذَا حَفِظْتُهُ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَزْهَرَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَ أَنْ يُحْثَى فِي وجُوهِهِمُ التُّرَابُ يَعْنِي الْمَدَّاحِينَ وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ أَظُنُّهُ إِغْفَالٌ مِنَ النَّاقِلِ لَهُ إِنَّمَا حَثَى النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى الشَّارِبِ التُّرَابَ وَلَكِنْ هَكَذَا حَدَّثَ بِهِ يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَلَمْ يُتَابَعْ عَلَيْهِ

Al-Fadl ibn Sahl narrated to us, he said: Ya'qub ibn Ibrahim ibn Sa'd narrated to us, he said: My father narrated to us from Muhammad ibn Ishaq from al-Zuhri — this is how I memorized it — from Abd al-Rahman ibn Azhar that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) ordered that dust be thrown in the faces of those who excessively praise others. This hadith — I believe it is an error from the transmitter. Rather, the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) threw dust at the wine-drinker, but this is how Ya'qub ibn Ibrahim narrated it, and he was not corroborated in this.
