Muhammad ibn Abd al-Malik ibn Zanjawayh narrated to us saying: Abd ar-Razzaq narrated to us saying: Ma'mar informed us from Hammam from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be well pleased with him) that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: 'While a man was walking along a road, he became very thirsty. He found a well and descended into it and drank. When he came out, he saw a dog panting and eating earth out of thirst. The man said: This dog has reached the same state of thirst as I had. So he descended into the well, filled his shoe with water, held it in his mouth, climbed out and gave the dog to drink. Allah appreciated this from him and forgave him.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, do we have a reward for the animals?' He said: 'In every moist liver there is a reward.'
