Al-Bara' said: 'When a man from the Companions of Muhammad (peace be upon him) was fasting and the time for breaking the fast came, if he fell asleep before breaking his fast, he would not eat that night or the next day until evening. Qays ibn Sirmah was fasting, and when the time for iftar came, he went to his wife and said: "Do you have any food?" She said: "No, but let me go and look for some." He had been working in his field that day, and his eyes overcame him with sleep. His wife came and when she saw him, she said: "How unfortunate for you!" By the next morning, before midday had passed, he fainted. This was mentioned to the Prophet (peace be upon him), and the verse was revealed: "Permitted for you on the night of fasting is intimacy with your wives. They are a garment for you and you are a garment for them" [Al-Baqarah 187]. They rejoiced greatly at it: "And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct from the black thread" [Al-Baqarah 187].'
