Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Furak narrated to us... from Jabir ibn Abdullah who said: The sun eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on an extremely hot day. The Messenger of Allah prayed and prolonged the standing until people began falling down. Then he bowed and prolonged it, then raised and prolonged, then bowed again and prolonged, then raised and prolonged, then prostrated two prostrations. Then he stood and did the same, so it was four bowings and four prostrations. He kept moving forward and backward during his prayer. Then he turned to his companions and said: 'Paradise and the Fire were presented to me. Paradise was brought close to me so that had I reached for a cluster of grapes I would have obtained it - or he said, my hand fell short of it - Hisham was uncertain. And the Fire was presented to me, so I kept stepping back out of fear that it might reach you. I saw a Himyari woman, tall and dark, being punished because of a cat she had tied up - she neither fed it nor gave it water, nor let it eat from the insects of the earth. And I saw Abu Thumamah Amr ibn Malik dragging his intestines in the Fire. They used to say that the sun and moon do not eclipse except for the death of a great person, but they are two signs from among the signs of Allah which He shows you. When they eclipse, pray until they clear.'
