Ibn Umar was asked about cheese and clarified butter. He said: Say Bismillah and eat. It was said: There is dead animal matter in it. He said: If you know there is dead animal matter in it, do not eat it. Some Companions would not inquire about it, presuming purity. This was narrated from Ibn Abbas, Ibn Umar, and others. Some would ask about it out of caution. It was narrated from Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari that he said: I would rather fall from this palace than eat cheese without asking about it. Al-Hasan al-Basri said: The Companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to ask about cheese but not about clarified butter.
