Abu Zakariyya ibn Abi Ishaq and Abu Bakr ibn al-Hasan informed us; they said: Abu al-Abbas al-Asamm narrated to us: Bahr ibn Nasr narrated to us: Ibn Wahb narrated to us: Nafi ibn Yazid informed me that he asked Yahya ibn Sa'id about incantations and hanging written [charms], and he said: Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib used to command hanging [verses of] the Qur'an, and said: "There is no harm in it." The Shaykh, may Allah have mercy on him, said: All of this returns to what we said — that if one recites with what is not known, or in the manner of the people of the Jahiliyyah of attributing well-being to the incantation itself, it is not permissible; but if one recites with the Book of Allah, or with what is known of the remembrance of Allah, seeking blessing through it, while believing that the descent of healing is from Allah, Most High, then there is no harm in it. And with Allah is success.
