أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ ثناعَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ثنا أَبِي ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ بُرَيْدَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبِي بُرَيْدَةَ ؓ يَقُولُ كُنَّا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ إِذَا وُلِدَ لِأَحَدِنَا غُلَامٌ ذَبَحَ شَاةً وَلَطَّخَ رَأْسَهُ بِدَمِهَا فَلَمَّا جَاءَ اللهُ بِالْإِسْلَامِ كُنَّا نَذْبَحُ شَاةً وَنَحْلِقُ رَأْسَهُ وَنُلَطِّخُهُ بِزَعْفَرَانٍ قَالَ الشَّيْخُ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ وَفِي حَدِيثِ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ مُوسَى عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْمُزَنِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فِي الْإِبِلِ فَرَعٌ وَفِي الْغَنَمِ فَرَعٌ وَيُعَقُّ عَنِ الْغُلَامِ وَلَا يُمَسُّ رَأْسُهُ بِدَمٍ

Abu Ali al-Rudhbari informed us > Muhammad ibn Bakr > Abu Dawud > Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Thabit > Ali ibn al-Husayn > his father > Abdullah ibn Buraydah: I heard my father Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) say: 'In the days of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance), when a boy was born to one of us, he would slaughter a sheep and smear the baby's head with its blood. When Allah brought Islam, we would slaughter a sheep, shave his head, and apply saffron to it.' The scholar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: In the hadith of Ayyub ibn Musa from Yazid ibn Abdullah al-Muzani from his father, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'In camels there is a fara' (firstborn sacrifice), and in sheep there is a fara', and the aqiqah should be performed for the boy without smearing his head with blood.'
